The latest subject of our ‘getting to know’ series is Neil, our design director and one of the longest-serving members of the team! It seems he has designs on who’ll continue his legacy at Harris – read on to find out who…
Tell us a bit about your role at Harris.
I’m design director at Harris. My role covers strategy, business development, digital, and making everything look as eye-catching as possible, with the support of the rest of the design team, of course.
How would you describe the culture at Harris?
It’s cheesy but true – everyone works hard and plays hard. We all consistently go above and beyond for our clients, and are always looking to develop what we can offer as a business, from dedicated social media management and remarketing, through to film, photography, and everything in between. Regular team building goes on, be it a film night, meal or a charity challenge like taking on Snowdon.
What’s been your favourite project to work on?
The Howarth 175th anniversary was a really exciting yearlong project. It was 100mph all year long and it was really rewarding to see it all come together at the trade day in November, where over 2,000 people came through the door.
I also got a massive kick from the development of the 2016 Arbordeck and Trex website, which was designed to complement a suite of nationwide TV ads, letting people who saw it request a sample. I remember sitting in front of the TV when the first ad aired and seeing my phone go crazy with requests for samples. We got over 400 that first night alone!
Did you pursue any other careers before working in design?
Not really. I always knew design was what I wanted to do. I had some interesting jobs while at university though. I was a fork lift truck driver, freelance signwriter and barman in a mock western bar in Leeds.
Your daughter, Darcey is a regular fixture in the office – can you see her following in your footsteps?
I’d love for Darcey to become a designer, and she’s already showing promise with her crayons, so who knows!
What did you have for lunch today?
We had a team lunch today to welcome our new designer, Elliott. I had a spicy pizza. It was spot on and much more interesting than the usual Sainsbury’s meal deal.
What’s your favourite TV show?
I’m enjoying finally watching Game of Thrones. I’ve read the books and it’s interesting to see how the TV show interprets them. Avoiding spoilers in the office is tricky though as most of the team are well ahead of me.
Do you have any pets?
Two cats and two horses – I must be a glutton for punishment!
