Having a mobile friendly website is becoming more and more important with almost 75% of adults in the UK now browsing the web on their mobile device. With the recent update to Google’s ranking algorithm, it seems that mobile friendliness is even more significant in making sure your site places high in search engine results.

What is the update?

Back in April 2015, Google made mobile friendliness a ranking signal for mobile searches. This meant that people searching on mobile devices were more likely to see results from mobile friendly websites than those designed just for desktop use.

A new update to the Google algorithm adds a greater weight to this ranking signal. Users searching on mobile devices will now have a much greater chance of finding pages optimised for mobile use, meaning older non-optimised sites may slide down the rankings.

How do I become mobile friendly?

Most modern websites are built with a responsive design approach, which means they will adapt to suit different devices be it mobile, tablet or desktop giving a great experience to the user no matter what device they are using.

Meeting certain criteria such as having a configured viewport, suitable tap targets for buttons and links and use of legible font sizes allows a site to get the mobile seal of approval from Google and rank higher on their search pages.

What else can I do?

Of course, while mobile friendliness is important, it is not the only ranking signal used by search engines. A good SEO strategy will take into account a range of other important factors such as site speed, optimisation and delivering high quality content.
